How to get started with dropshipping in 2020?
Updated: Feb 1, 2020
Step 1: Find and research the product you want to sell
This may be the hardest step to starting your dropshipping business. You’ll need to begin by deciding what niche you want to focus on and whether there is a demand for the products in that niche. Finding a worthwhile product in itself takes some time and effort.
If you are struggling to find a product to sell, you could instead try to identify who your target audience is by considering factors like:
The age group
The category of interest such as gaming, fashion, animals etc
The location of your audience
Once you have made a note of who you are going to be targeting, the product selection will be lower, making it easier to find the best possible product.
After you have chosen the product you wish to sell, it is important that you research it using the following criteria:
Asking the seller for a sample so that you can test the product yourself
Order volume on the supplier’s website (this means the number of units sold by the supplier. Usually, the higher the volume, the more likely the product is to sell.)
Looking at the reviews on the seller’s web page to see what people think about the product.
Analysing your competitors selling similar or the same product. You can do this by doing a quick Google search of the product, to see who your competition is. Using the top results on Google, you can identify which of your competitors are doing well by searching for their social media profiles and checking how much engagement they get for the product they post about.
Step 2: Registering with a supplier
There are many suppliers to choose from but the biggest supplier with the cheapest products is AliExpress. It is very popular amongst dropshipping businesses.
The sign-up process is quick and easy. Once you have created your account, you can get started immediately.
We will be using AliExpress to ship the product directly from the seller’s warehouse to the customer’s address. Whenever we receive an order from our store, we will input the customer’s name and address onto the AliExpress checkout form. We pay the supplier for the product and they will deal with the postage and package of the product to the customer.
Step 3: Creating your store
Creating an eCommerce website has never been easier, thanks to services like Shopify that make it ever so simple to build an online store and get it up and running within a matter of hours.
Sign up with Shopify and get a 14-day free trial to start your online dropshipping business.
The reason why I recommend using Shopify is due to the following reasons:
You don’t need to be a tech wiz to use the Shopify platform
There are hundreds of ready-made templates to choose from
Shopify makes it very easy to process orders
There are many apps designed for Shopify stores to optimise your site
Step 4: Advertising
Without any incoming traffic to your store, you won’t be able to create a sustainable dropshipping business. Unless you are an influencer or someone with a large following on social media, it’s crucial that you run ads in order to target the right audience to your store.
This is why you’ll need to set aside a budget of how much you want to spend marketing your product. Obviously, the more money you spend on advertising, the more engagement your ad will receive. However, this does not have to be the case. Instead, we can still successfully run an ad campaign on a tight budget if we are strategic about it.
